Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of arthroscopic lateral release in the management of chondromalacia patellae.

Materials and Methods : The subjects were 48 patients ranging from 36 to 61 years of age. All patients were diagnosed to have chondromalacia patellae by physical examination. Arthroscopic lateral retinacular release of the knee has been performed on the patients under supine position. The results were reviewed at one year and three years after operation.

Results : Of those who had grade I chondromalacia, 83.3% had a good at one year and by three years 75% were still good. Although grade III had 63.6%, the number of good results dropped to 36% by three years.

Conclusion : Arthroscopy lateral retinacular release is effective for a correct classification of cartilaginous lesions, and it has a useful role to play in the management of early stage chondromalacia patellae.
